Read this! The internet is about to get messed up.

The Internet, as we know it, is going to change (and not for the good... think the really bad, worst-case remember-that-Internet-thing? bad) if the gov and Verizon, comcast, att, etc. get their way. I doubt there is any other issue that is more important right now. Digg up.

3pm Injection [4]

Some UI improvements have been made on 3pm with the addition of toggles for each number/letter category as well as the ability to minimize and maximize all categories at once. You can even add the live bookmark to Firefox now. There's lots of music out there now and more to come. Be sure to discover all the unique audio not found on the iTunes Music Store or in your local music store. Thanks to everyone who has shown interest in the 3pm idea. I took the plunge and flashed my Nokia 770 with the latest Software Update (5.2006.13-7). It was a success and I noticed that the Opera browser is faster and doesn't crash nearly as much as it use to (Good job Nokia!). Also, I noticed that when putting the cover over the screen while connected to the Internet I here an interesting "whoosh" sound that I never heard with the previous version of the software. I'm sure there are one or two other improvements/additions to the software that others and myself have yet to discover. If only Nokia gave us the change log of the software it would make the less adventurous 770 owners' decision to update or not much easier.

Even if (or when) Google falls faster than the Roman empire, they willessentially serve as the best template of future Internet companies.

Google Calendar (unofficially?) launched last night, and I was able to log in and play around with the interface (as many others obviously have). I have to say, it is faster than I thought it would be. It may be due to the fact that it's still fairly new and not many people were up as late as I was (on the east coast anyway) fooling with it. It may also be due to not much calendar data is being served just yet to myself or others which may eventually slow it down (God, I hope not).

Anyway, it's very intuitive and well laid out. It's quite simple to add and edit events and just does exactly what a modern online calendar should. I like some of the other less noticeable features such as the notifications via pop-up, email, sms, and cell phone. There are options to import iCal and MS Outlook formats. One of the least expected, but sure to become one of my favorite features is the create and share other calendars with family, friends, and the general public. Also neat is the ability to drag and drop events to different days/times and even drag across the grid to span days/times.

I've tried to access the calendar via the Nokia 770 to no avail (no Opera support?). Hopefully Google will make this work soon enough though. Going through some more of the details of the setup, I noticed the ability to change the colors of calendars, XML and iCal formats, and printing to PDF format.

And for my (not-so final) judgment on Google Calendar: There's going to be one more tab in my Firefox browser from now on. All in all, it's a great addition to the Google universe. I for one... well you know the rest.

TechCrunch has a snippet about the new TuneFeed service that will allow people to upload music to an allotted space and put a Flash player on a website to share with visitors.MySpace and others have similar services that do the same, but It seems in the personal blog and website arena people have their own way of pulling this off. Personally, I'd like to see some sites and blogs that differ from the NET9 approach to this idea. Why buy the cow when the milk is free, right? Internet News
I love this article from Ars Technica about RealNetworks fighting tooth and nail to find a reason to injecting DRM into Linux. I find it amusing to watch these companies flounder around trying to justify their delusions of ultimate control over the artistic works of others. It becomes even more hilarious when anyone that actually knows what the masses truly want speaks out and squashes the debate on the spot with even the simplest rebuttal. It really is amazing how as soon as a company's plan to make tons of money in a popular and financially attractive market backfires, they panic and try to implement rules and regulations on the use of the very products and/or services they were counting on making money with. What they don't realize is that this act of "protecting" a particular product and/or service frustrates consumers to the inevitable point where it's no longer worth their time to even fool with it, further decreasing the potential of the company to make money with it. I may not know what the answer is to everyone's issues with DRM, but I know the way things are going it will be a while before one that works is truly found.

I just noticed while surfing the web with my 770 that Bloglines has a new option to minimize and maximize the left sidebar. It works great for reading feeds on the 770 when I want to view just a particular feed's content. It's almost as if it was made for the 770's screen. I am surprised it's not such a big deal in the media. It just goes to show you how some small things make a big difference, yet are seldom talked about.

Ars Technica reports that the music industry is going after illegal music file-sharers harder than ever. A revolution is at hand people, and something has to give. If P2P is to survive, there must be some sort of evolution must take place. However, I think the music industry and the movie industry going after file-sharers is like the the War on Terror. It's not going to end anytime soon, and unfortunately both conflicts will likely get worse before we see an end to them.

AllPeers has begun their first phase of beta testing the long hyped Firefox file sharing extension. I just got my invite not long ago and will be waiting to get the extension when they start dishing them out. I hear it may take up to a few weeks for people such as myself who got invites to get it. Lets hope they don't take too long.

Mobile News
Antonio Gomes has been working to get Minimo working on the 770 lately, and has made great strides in getting us a usable version of the browser. There's still some work to be done on making it easier to run without using the command line, but I think his project is coming along quite nicely. Be sure to check out his current .deb if you are interested in testing it a bit.

Interesting information over at The Register about Fujitsu's UMPC concept. This is one of the most logical UMPC designs that I have seen yet. It's not perfect, and not likely to replace my 770 with its CD size, but that fold-out keyboard idea looks good. It appears as if some simple functions can possibly be used even when the keyboard is closed. All in all, this is the kind of variety the newly emerging UMPC market needs to retain the interests of potential buyers as well as the media.

News of an Opera browser for the Nintendo DS launching in June in Japan caught my attention over at Tech Digest recently. Good for Opera, Good for Nintedo. I still think the idea of having to pay any extra money to be able to browse the web on a device that has built-in WiFi. Is it just me?

Internet News
There's a very interesting article by Om Malik about the power of URLs. The very simplicity of the URL concept, I think, is what makes it such a powerful and necessary element in networking and web technology. The idea that if it is "out there" you can "link to it" is one that has been taken for granted by this generations of web developers and designers as well as big media companies. What is still amazing to me is how quickly you can build a useful site on little more than links to other useful websites and media. The URL has been the core of Internet ethics discussion for some time, and has been one that blurs the laws between reality and cyberspace time and time again. In the end however, the URL is just another standard tool available to anyone who knows how to use it. Just as cut/copy/paste, delete, and print are tools that right or wrong can and will be used by anyone for as long as the computer exists.

Nokia brings promising news to 770 users in the form of an updated Maemo Development Platform Roadmap. The list of new features in que are VoIP, Instant Messaging, IRC, and even Video over IP. It looks as if there is also hope for Java support as well as a new application installer. This is all so exciting, but it would have been great if they had posted a rough range of completion dates. As it stands, it may be safe to say that it is highly unlikely for us 770 owners to see any of these features before the fall.
